Tech Tips
All those with a TC88 engine of any flavor manufactured before 14 December 1999 check with your dealer for possible cam bearing replacements to the newer roller bearings.
Street wise equipment evaluation
1. Replacement Harley double platinum plugs increased cruising gas mileage by 5mpg. From 50 to 55mpg at 60 mph on 1998 Sportster Sport.
2. Installation of the Mikuni 42mm flat side carb on a tc88 increased performance noticeably. Mileage is 40 mpg at any highway speed.
3. When installing the Mikuni carb on a tc88, be sure to notch/grind the top most cylinder cooling fin on each cylinder to allow for carb bowl clearance. If this is not done carb will touch fins when bolted in place and cause vibration problems. Fuel foaming, an over rich mixture and boil over of fuel to name a few. Check the installation regardless of who does the installation. Plus it makes for a better manifold seal.
5. On a tc88 DWG I have been using HDSE slip on mufflers. They run great and have a usable powerband from 2000rpm to 6000rpm+. They get a little loud and raspy at highway speeds.
6. I installed a Vance Hinds Pro Pipe with the stock/quiet baffle. My powerband changed to 1800rpm to 5300rpm. Seems the torque dies on top end and it is as loud as the SE mufflers, maybe a little more.
7. Installed White Brothers E series 2/1 pipes. Idle smoothed and slowed and is almost as quiet as factory. (14 discs) The powerband changed to 1400rpm to 6000rpm with a real nice rumble from the exhaust at highway speeds. I do like the deep sound much better. Installation is slow but simple. I would recommend this as a great street exhaust system.
8. Installed SE 203 cams in my tc88 DWG. Upped my power curve to 2200rpm to 6000rpm. Nice increase in power above 3500rpm.
9. Dyno run for 1998 Sportster Sport 1200, both stock and tuned up.
10. Dyno run for 1999 Dyna 1450 "Stage I"
